Intimate partner violence disproportionately affects adolescent girls
(15–19 years) in low- and lower-middle-income countries and regions. These differences between high- and lower-income regions are starker in relation to partner violence within the past 12 months, likely reflecting the challenges in leaving abusive relationships in resource-constrained settings and where levels of stigmatization may be high.
The prevalence of past 12-months physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence against adolescent girls was highest in Central Sub-Saharan Africa (34%), Oceania (33%), Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa (24%), and South Asia (21%). These regions also had the highest lifetime prevalence of intimate partner violence against adolescent girls: Oceania (47%), Central Sub-Saharan Africa (40%), Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa (31%), and South Asia (29%).
Even in regions with the lowest prevalence of lifetime physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence against adolescent girls, one in every ten girl is affected.
